We’ve recently moved into a new expanded workspace, and critical to our planning was energy efficiency. We’ve been on our sustainability journey for a few years, so it was vital that we also made our new patch – well, green! Our office is designed to be super energy efficient with an air source heat pump installed for low-carbon heating and hot water, as well as high-grade insulation, and low-energy LED lighting.

- Complete an audit. Where are the majority of your emissions coming from right now – your fleet of vehicles, or perhaps your old premises that need insulation? Assess your current situation and form your list of priorities.
- Make a plan. The measures you need to take must be costed and built into your medium and long-term business plans. If you don’t invest in becoming net zero, you’ll never get there.
- Don’t forget the small changes. Switching all your lightbulbs to LED, for example, will be a cost-saving to your business, as well as improving your carbon footprint.
- Seek support. There’s a lot of funding available to help SMEs on their way to net zero. We got a lot of support from Business Gateway – it’s worth doing the research!
- Shout about it! Your commitment to net zero is a brilliant differentiator for your business, attracting employees and customers alike who want to be part of your journey – so tell the world that you’re on your way!
