Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023: Scott's Thoughts

For those who don’t know, what is Crunchy Carrots?

Crunchy Carrots is a one-stop-shop for all things digital marketing, providing businesses across Scotland with web design, photography/videography, branding, social media management, marketing strategy, and much more. We’ve been around since 2017 when it was just a handful of us and we now have a 13-strong team, including our Chief Morale Booster Alfie the Cockapoo. There’s a real range of skills and expertise across the board.

It’s an exciting time of growth and major milestones here, with the business officially achieving ‘Net Zero’ status last Spring, a rapid expansion of the team, and – perhaps most exciting of all – the opening of a new office in Perth.

What encouraged you to unlock the potential of a young person as an apprentice within your business/organisation?

I was an apprentice joiner myself when I was younger. It gave me a strong start to my working life and stood me in good stead as I moved on into other areas of work. I wanted to be able to do the same thing for our apprentices; allowing them to learn while they work and giving a platform to better themselves and develop into a role for everyone’s benefit.

What benefits has employing Apprentices brought to your business?

From the business’s point of view, it’s been good to add the value of fresh perspective and have some ‘homegrown’ talent that’s been able to buy into, and develop in, the culture here; something we value a lot at Crunchy Carrots.

How many apprentices do you currently employ?

Crunchy Carrots currently employs three Modern Apprentices.

We have Jack on the web and IT side, and Megan and Joe – two of our creative media team members. I really appreciate the benefits that investing in the young workforce brings to everyone involved. I think that MAs making up around a quarter of our team – and, at one point, 30% of it before the recent expansion – is a real testimony to our commitment.

What support did you receive to employ the young person?

We’ve had great help from the separate council bodies for each of our apprentices. Falkirk Council’s Employment Training Unit, Fife Council’s Employability team, and Stirling Council’s Youth Transitions and Employer Engagement team all helped greatly in the process of bringing our apprentices onboard, including support with all the admin and paperwork.

From then on, those assessing our MAs at GP Strategies have also made sure their training has gone smoothly – they’re all making great progress with their qualifications.

Are you part of the Young Persons Guarantee?

Yes, we’re part of the Young Persons Guarantee. Working in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce has been a really positive experience since the start and I’d like to thank for them for all the support they’ve given us.
